Receiver Steve Breaston's role was diminished last week against the Cowboys, and the Cardinals have not approached him about a contract beyond this season.
Combine those two facts, and there is ample reason to believe that Breaston might be playing his last game for the team Sunday.
The Cardinals would like to re-sign Breaston, but at the right price. They would want a new contract to reflect the risk they think they would be taking because of Breaston's troublesome right knee.
Breaston has suffered injuries to the knee the last two seasons, and he missed three games this year after undergoing surgery.
Cardinals officials declined comment, but they are concerned about Breaston's durability. He has been limited in many practices this season, and that's made game-planning harder.
Breaston, however, is only 27, and there are no public indications that his knee problems will linger. Breaston is one of the toughest players the team has. He has played hurt and consistently returned early from injuries because he genuinely cares about winning.
Those qualities should not be dismissed easily by a team that has lost twice as many games (10) as it's won this season.
It's not as if the team has much depth at the position.
The Cardinals traded Anquan Boldin to the Ravens in the offseason, partly because they had Breaston ready as a replacement.
If Breaston leaves, Larry Fitzgerald would be the only top-flight receiver remaining, and he's due to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2011 season.
