--Coach Ken Whisenhunt didn't deny a report that he had talked to receiver Larry Fitzgerald about the team's quest for a new starting quarterback. Whisenhunt, however, insisted that the discussion was part of his normal discourse with players and that Fitzgerald was not involved in the personnel side of the organization.
"Larry is obviously not making the decisions," Whisenhunt said. "There's a lot of things that guys want that they don't necessarily get. That's why I have individual meetings with them to get their ideas.
"It would make sense to at least talk to some of your players."
--The Cardinals aren't commenting but it appears unlikely they will use either the franchise or transition tag on a player in the two-week period.
--Whisenhunt interviewed a handful of other candidates for defensive coordinator, including Miami secondary coach Todd Bowles. He also requested permission from the Packers to interview Winston Moss, but didn't hear back before Horton was hired.
--Quarterbacks coach Chris Miller, who applied for the head coaching job at Southern Oregon University, will remain with the Cardinals.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're going to have an aggressive, downhill, attacking defense." -- Defensive coordinator Ray Horton.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
Coach Ken Whisenhunt completed his first priority of the offseason: hiring a new defensive coordinator and completing his coaching staff.
Now, he will turn his attention to personnel. The Cardinals already have met about their options at quarterback for 2011.
The team is expected to express interest in veteran Marc Bulger, who spent last season with the Ravens. Trading for Denver's Kyle Orton or Philadelphia's Kevin Kolb is a source of much speculation, but the Cardinals aren't in a position to give up high draft picks for either. They need help on several fronts.
