OLB Joey Porter didn't play well in 2010, knows it and accepted a pay cut to remain with the team. "Early in my career, I probably would have been mad about it," Porter said. "You get five sacks, they don't really want to pay you $5.7 million base the next year. You have to be smart enough to understand that.
"I knew that would be asked of me. That was my decision. If I'd played better last year, I wouldn't have been in this situation."
--Guard Rex Hadnot is one of the few Cardinals players who know new quarterback Kevin Kolb. They played together at the University of Houston. Hadnot was a senior who had endured 18 losses as a sophomore and junior. With Kolb, the team went to a bowl game. Hadnot said he was excited all offseason about the possibility of acquiring Kolb. "I was skinnin' and grinnin'," he said.
-- Kolb will wear No. 4, just as he did with the Eagles. Kicker Jay Feely had the number but switched to No. 3. Kolb made a donation to the Feely Family Foundation.
--Left tackle Levi Brown said it was "weird" to have so many teammates watching and not participating in the first practice. Nineteen Cardinals were prevented from practicing because they signed contracts this week. "They are over talking about, we should have done this and that. I'm like, 'forget you, man. You're not out here right now. Just stand over there until it's your turn.'"
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Last year we went 5-11, and I think there was a lot of individuality going on out there on the field. This was one way the coaches were trying to get us to focus on the team aspect. Learn the people around you, know who they are. I think it's a good move. It can't hurt." -- OT Levi Brown, on players having their last names taped on helmets.
CAMP CALENDAR: Camp closes in Flagstaff on Aug. 25. Annual Red and White practice is scheduled for Aug. 6. One night practice is scheduled, for Aug. 16 at Coconino High in Flagstaff.
