Williams, Washington prepare for second year

Dan Williams is once again struggling with weight issues and Daryl Washington should have an expanded role this year.

Nose tackle Dan Williams reported to camp overweight and is in danger of losing his starting job.

"Where's he at? He's over there running and getting in shape," said defensive coordinator Ray Horton. "He's not in shape right now and he's one of the guys we're counting on, and he's doing what he needs to do to help us play."

--Horton is looking forward to finding ways to use inside linebacker Daryl Washington. He plays the weak-side spot, and his athletic ability gives him a chance to excel. "If I can use him the right way, unleash him and let him use his athletic ability, we've got a dynamic player," Horton said.

--Kolb wasn't able to practice until Aug. 4 and he faces the daunting task of learning a new offense. "We're on install number 12 and it's my third day and I'm out there trying to run an offense," Kolb said after the team's longest practice in pads. "But I like it that way. I like it when there's a little bit of pressure on me."

--When Deuce Lutui failed his physical with the Bengals because he was overweight, he got a conciliatory call from his mother. "She calls me yesterday and says, 'Deuce, I think I should start cooking for you.' I said, 'no, Mom, you're to blame for all this.'"

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Deuce and I have talked a few times, and none of it was over a meal." -- Coach Ken Whisenhunt on guard Deuce Lutui's weight problem.
