STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
The Cardinals will continue to look for help to bolster their pass rush and to protect the passer. The two starting tackles, Levi Brown and Brandon Keith, didn't play especially well last season and there isn't much depth.
-- Running back Beanie Wells failed to score on four runs after the team had first and goal from the eight against the Raiders. Coaches don't seem concerned, however. There were blocking mistakes and Wells was running too high. They think those issues are correctable.
-- Cornerback A.J. Jefferson continues to start on the left side, holding off rookie Patrick Peterson. An undrafted free agent last year, Jefferson has played well throughout training camp.
-- NT David Carter, a sixth-round pick out of UCLA, has played well in camp. When he was drafted, Carter projected as a defensive end, but the Cardinals have a greater need at tackle.
-- TE Jim Dray, a seventh-round pick, faces a stiff test to make the roster. But he blocked exceptionally well against the Raiders. That's a quality Ken Whisenhunt, a former blocking tight end, values highly.
EXPECTED BATTLE OF THE WEEK: ILB Paris Lenon vs. Stewart Bradley. Lenon was productive as the starter last year, leading the team in tackles with 127. But Bradley is bigger and more athletic.
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Rookie Anthony Sherman is pushing Reagan Maui'a for the starting fullback job. A.J. Jefferson and Patrick Peterson continue to compete for the left corner's job. Rashad Johnson is replacing injured SS Adrian Wilson but Matt Ware and Hamza Abdulla are pushing for time.
-- DE Sam Acho, the fourth-round pick, is being used on the left side behind Clark Haggans.
-- TE Rob Housler, the third-round selection, has shown he can run and catch. But he has a long way to go as a blocker.
-- WR DeMarco Sampson, a seventh-round pick, runs polished routes and has good hands. He's been impressive in the first week.
-- FB Anthony Sherman, a fifth-round pick, has shown some solid blocking skills and played well on special teams in the opener.
-- RB Ryan Williams, a second-round pick, looks quick and powerful. His playing time could depend upon how well he can pass block.
INJURY REPORT: SS Adrian Wilson (biceps tear) is out but is undergoing rehabilitation and is expected to play at some point this year.
--CB Michael Adams underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. It's considered minor and he hopes to return in two weeks.
