--The Cardinals are opening the season at home for just the fourth time since they moved to Arizona in 1988. It's just the third time the NFL has scheduled them to open at home. They were supposed to open at Washington in 2001 but that game was postponed because of the terrorist attacks.
--WR Larry Fitzgerald has played against the Panthers seven times in his career. He has averaged almost eight receptions for 120 yards, yet the Cardinals are just 1-6 in those games.
--This is the second consecutive year the Cardinals have opened against a rookie quarterback who won the Heisman Trophy and was the first overall pick in the draft. They did it last year against the Rams and Sam Bradford.
Bradford passed 55 times and kept the Rams in the game. He did have three interceptions, however.
--Tight end Todd Heap and Joey Porter battled against each other for six years when they were with other teams. Heap was with the Ravens, and Porter with the Steelers when the two used to go head to head. It was not a pleasant relationship. Some thought Porter took a cheap shot at Heap in a 2004 game. Heap was hobbling with an ankle sprain and Porter knocked him over as the Ravens tried to spike the ball.
"Joey and I obviously have a very good relationship now," Heap told The Arizona Republic. "But I wasn't too fond of him for a long time."
The two haven't talked about old times since Heap joined the team early in training camp.
"Oh, it's come up," Heap said. "But not since we've been in this locker room. It came up way before then."
BY THE NUMBERS: 7 - Number of victories Ken Whisenhunt needs to pass Don Coryell for most victories by a Cardinals head coach. Whisenhunt is 36-34 in four seasons, including playoffs. Coryell won 42 games from 1973-77, and Jim Hanifan won 39 from 1980-85. Hanifan is the last Cardinals coach to last five entire seasons.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think the biggest thing we have to guard against in this first game is trying to put in too much stuff. I've been guilty of doing that before, and I think this year it's even more important we don't go overboard." -- Coach Ken Whisenhunt.
