The Arizona Cardinals have already been busy setting up moves for free agency and will reportedly sign LB Sean Weatherspoon to a one-year deal on Tuesday. While Weatherspoon isn't a huge splash on the open market, we look at who would be in these dream free-agency scenarios for Arizona.
RB Adrian Peterson
At the top of the list is Peterson who would provide a tremendous upgrade at the running back position. Sure, it will take a little work for Peterson to become a true free agent but there is still a great deal of uncertainty around his future with the Minnesota Vikings.
Peterson has expressed interest in considering a move to the Cardinals as they made the short list of teams he'd be willing to play for. Should Arizona land the services of Peterson, it would instantly bring credibility to a struggling running game.
LB Brian Orakpo
Like running back, Arizona has a great need for help it the pass-rushing department. Orakpo has had his ups and downs throughout his career but he'd instantly supply the Cardinals with the edge pass rusher that the team desperately needs.
Orakpo has missed 24 games over the past three seasons, so the injury concerns are very real. When on the field, however, Orakpo has been a force to be reckoned with. In seasons where he's played 15 games or more, Orakpo has totaled at least 8.5 sacks each year.
DE/OLB Trent Cole
Like Orakpo, Cole would provide the team with a dynamic pass rusher and if the team could somehow secure the services or both players, they'd really be onto something. The most likely scenario, though, would be one or the other finding their way to the desert.
Unlike Orakpo, Cole has been a relative ironman missing only five games throughout his 10-year NFL career. Furthermore, Cole has been an ultra-productive performer accumulating 85 career sacks. The only potential downside of this move would be catching Cole on the downswing of his career.
DT Stephen Paea
Gone are the likes of Darnell Dockett and Dan Williams could be next to depart. Paea is one of the higher ranked defensive tackles available and would prove to be an adequate replacement for Williams in the heart of the Cardinals defensive line.
Paea has the unique ability to both stop the run and rush the passer - a combination that would be welcomed in Arizona. The departure of Williams would be a huge loss in regards to run defense but the Cardinals also have a glaring need for pass rushers. Paea would fit the bill on both fronts.
