The Arizona Cardinals reached a one-year contract agreement with DE/OLB Bertrand Berry on Wednesday, the team announced.
Berry (6-3, 260) rejoins the Cardinals after playing in 14 regular season games (four starts) and collecting a team high five sacks to go along with 31 tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 2008. Berry also appeared in all four of the Cardinals postseason games where he started in three of them, collecting two sacks and a fumble recovery.
He originally joined the Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent in 2004 out of Denver. Berry was selected as a Pro Bowler in his first season in Arizona after leading the NFC with a career-high 14.5 sacks. He collected six sacks in both of the next two seasons before both campaigns were cut short due to injuries.
Berry originally entered the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts as their third-round pick (86th overall) in the 1997 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He spent the 2000 season out of football but returned to the NFL after a tryout with the Denver Broncos in 2001 where he would spend the next three seasons before joining the Cardinals.
In five seasons in Arizona, Berry has collected 34 sacks, nine forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 157 tackles (102 solos) in 57 regular season games (47 starts).
Berry will get a chance to compete for a starting job against DE/OLB Travis LaBoy.
