Arizona Cardinals Ink Seventh-Round Pick

The Arizona Cardinals and seventh-round pick RB LaRod Stephens-Howling have agreed to terms on a three-year deal, a league source told's Adam Caplan. No other contract terms were immediately available. The former University of Pittsburgh back played behind LeSean McCoy and didn't receive a combine invitation, but his stellar Pro Day performance caught the attention of the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals sent J.J. Arrington and Edgerrin James packing this offseason. That said, the Cardinals drafted two running backs to fill the void.

The Cardinals selected first-round running back Chris Wells and seventh-round ball carrier LaRod Stephens-Howling.

The Cardinals also picked up Jason Wright who let it be known that he wanted to be more than a No. 3 rusher.

Tim Hightower should be the starter come opening day as Wells learns the NFL ropes. Wells is already a bit behind, as he was still in school at Ohio State during the past few weeks of OTA's.

The Cardinals will need all the help they can get. After finishing last in the league in rushing, the new additions and sophomore Tim Hightower will need big years. Hightower finished his rookie season with double digit touchdowns, a lucrative campaign to say the least.

Stephens-Howling has his work cut out for him. But he is an intriguing back who receives comparisons to lightning bug Darren Sproles.

"That's a realistic comparison, because of their measurables and quickness, but it's unfair because of the unforeseen success that Darren Sproles has achieved," draft analyst Chris Steuber has said. "However, LaRod Stephens Howling is an interesting player in his own right. He was a starter at Pitt until LeSean McCoy arrived and did fairly well. When you're talking about a 5-foot-7, 180-pound scat back, there's only so much you can expect; a prime example of that is former Cardinals second round pick J.J. Arrington. Arrington is a little thicker than Stephens Howling, but I think that's a better comparison."
