NFC West Watch: San Francisco 49ers

From quarterback battles to veterans brushing off rookies, the San Francisco 49ers have their own story lines going on this offseason. AZRedReport.com takes a look at the Cardinals Week 1 foe.

Adam Snyder:

OTs Adam Snyder and Marvel Smith, a free-agent pickup in the offseason, will be battling for the starting job on the right side. Smith has experienced back problems the past two seasons, landing on injured reserve. Snyder is a valuable backup who struggled at times at right tackle last season. The 49ers were relying on Jonas Jennings to play right tackle a year ago, but the oft-injured Jennings played two games before his season came to an abrupt end with a shoulder injury.

Alex Smith

QB Alex Smith was said to be in competition with Shaun Hill for the 49ers' starting job last summer. That was before offensive coordinator Mike Martz elevated J.T. O'Sullivan into the battle. O'Sullivan eventually won the job for the start of the regular season.

While the quarterbacks were kept in the dark during that process, Smith said this year the competition has a different feel to it.

"The attitude from coach (Mike) Singletary all the way down, it's far different," Smith said. "Last year was ... I don't' want to say more lax, but it was a little bit. Everything is on the table right now. Coach Singletary doesn't hold anything back with us, so it's all out there. He's going to tell you what he thinks and what he wants. He'll tell you to your face and look you in the eye. Last year it was, ?Hey, what's going on?' This year, it's nothing close to that."

Isaac Bruce

WR Isaac Bruce said he does not have much desire to serve as a mentor to his younger teammates. Bruce forfeited a potential $25,000 workout bonus this offseason when he remained home to work out on his own. He was around his teammates only during its mandatory minicamp.

Bruce said he gained all he needed as a youngster from watching teammate Flipper Anderson with the Los Angeles Rams.

"If I was interested in being a good receiver in the NFL, I think he was a good guy that I could watch," Bruce said. "I didn't really have to talk to him. I could just watch what he did and just do the same things that he did and get the same results. So, if I'm a mentor, I'll be that. If I'm not, I'm not."
