On the day before training camp begins, the Cardinals got one step closer to a complete roster. Arizona agreed to a four-year deal with second-round draft pick Daryl Washington, a linebacker from TCU. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Washington was a defensive catalyst for a Texas Christian team that won the Fiesta Bowl last season. The Irving, Texas native earned first-team All-American and Mountain West honors in 2009, collecting 109 tackles along with 11 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and three interceptions.
Washington was an impact player in four seasons with the Horned Frogs, finishing his career with 220 tackles, 5.5 sacks, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was also a special teams standout, blocking four kicks in his career.
Following the departure of Karlos Dansby, the Cardinals traded up in the second round to select the 6'2", 230 pound linebacker to help repopulate a thin middle linebacker position. Washington is expected to challenge for a starting role in training camp.
With Washington under contract, defensive lineman Dan Williams remains the team's only unsigned draft pick. With Denver signing Tim Tebow, who was drafted the pick before Williams, Arizona now has a better idea of what the nose tackle's terms will be. They hope to have Williams signed in the next few days, thus missing as little training camp time as possible.
To make room on the roster for Washington, the Cardinals released veteran fullback Reagan Maui'a.
