Cardinals: Training Camp Battles & Awards

Get the latest on the Card's top camp battles and performances as well as an update on the rookies.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: G Deuce Lutui is still running with the second team. He is still overweight. But he has been one of the best guards in camp and it's going to be hard to continue to play him behind Reggie Wells or even Alan Faneca. Lutui played three quarters of last week's game. At that rate, he shouldn't have trouble losing the 20 or so pounds that coaches want him to.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: CB Greg Toler played well against the Texans, and appears to be closing the gap on starter Trumaine McBride. It's a contest that might not be decided until the end of training camp.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ILB Daryl Washington was impressive in the first preseason game. He finished with 13 tackles and a fumble recovery. He was all over the field and made plays on blitzes as well as against the run.

ROOKIE REPORT: NT Dan Williams, first-round pick, is taking extra reps after missing three days of camp before signing. Williams appeared to play decently in the first game and could be the run stuffer the team has been looking for.

ILB Daryl Washington has displayed great speed and is making decent progress. WR Andre Roberts, the third round pick, continues to have trouble catching the ball. TE Jim Dray, the seventh round pick, had a nice catch in the game.

INJURY REPORT: WR Larry Fitzgerald (right knee) suffered a sprained MCL and is expected to miss a few weeks, but be available for the season opener. ... LB Gerald Hayes (back) is on PUP. He underwent back surgery in early July and likely won't practice until early September at the earliest. ... TE Ben Patrick (displaced kneecap) will miss a couple of weeks of work but is expected to return well before the regular season. ... OLB O'Brien Schofield (knee) is on the non-football injury list. He is rehabbing from knee surgery in January. ... ILB Reggie Walker (hamstring) missed the first game. An undrafted rookie last year, Walker needs an impressive preseason to make the team.
