The Cardinals' quarterbacks have been well scrutinized throughout the preseason and a change has been made at the position. While the move isn't set in stone, Derek Anderson will make his first appearance in the starting lineup Saturday night against the Chicago Bears. At this point, Anderson's stint with the first-team offense is on a trial basis, but it's hard to believe it won't come at the expense of Matt Leinart's confidence.
Coach Ken Whisenhunt insists the motive of the change is simply a reversal of roles to see how each player reacts, but it could be a sign of things to come. The fact that Anderson is getting the opportunity shows the progress he's made since arriving in the desert. It could also be a sign that the Arizona coaching staff is taking Leinart's struggles seriously and preparations for a contingency plan have begun.
When comparing Anderson and Leinart, the two signal callers couldn't be more different. Anderson boasts an extremely strong arm and the Cardinals' offense has been more effective with him under center. Meanwhile, Leinart's lack of arm strength has been a continuous issue and his inability to stretch the field has remained his biggest shortcoming during the preseason.
Other potential changes to the depth chart include CB Greg Toler and rookie LB Daryl Washington. Both players jump into the starting lineup seems inevitable and there's a good chance they'll get their first shot later this week in Chicago.
