Chargers Take Another CB, Drayton Florence

John Butler once said, "You can never have too many cornerbacks." The San Diego Charegrs took it to heart with the selection of Drayton Florence, cornerback out of Tuskegee with their second round selection, 46th overall. Previously the Bolts took Sammy "Cany Man" Davis in the first round.

Drayton Florence joins the Chargers in what now looks like a crowded secondary. With the 46th pick the Bolts took the man they scouted heavily.

"I spent about two hours with Buddy Nix San Diego's director of player personnel)," Florence said. "We talked about a variety of things and watched film for about two hours. It was a great meeting, and I am really glad he took the time to sit down with me."

"Coach Schottenheimer said he wanted bump-and-run corners and we got two of them. It makes us better in the secondary. I've probably seen that old boy (Florence) more than I've seen my wife over the last year," said Nix. "We feel good about the guy. He has the same physical ability as the first round guys. We feel fortunate that he fell to us where he did."

"I think my man-to-man coverage skills and my aggressiveness are my strengths," said Florence. "I'm always there. I'm always around the football. I'm just trying to make plays and do anything to help my team get that victory every Sunday. That's what's expected of me, and that's what I want to do."

Now Florence will patrol the secondary with the Bolts. In the tough AFC West, the Chargers were in dire need of cornerbacks to help stregthen a defense ranked last in the NFL in pass defense in 2002.

"I have an opportunity to be out there in San Diego, and I'm going to make the most of my chance. I'm going to work hard and hopefully good things will happen. I just want to help the team win."

"When I first got the call, my first thought was about Buddy Nix," said Florence. "We visited a couple of times. He came out here a couple of times here to Tuskegee. San Diego's a great place. I'm really excited to be a Charger; I can't thank them enough."
