Matt Wilhelm joins the San Diego Chargers in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft, 112th overall.
Wilhelm is a huge linebacker at 6-4, 240 pounds. He ran a 4.73 on campus and missed most of the combines touring the White House.
"I think I bring overall athleticism with great size comparable to Junior Seau, who has been there for so many years and has had such a great career," said Wilhelm. "That's something the Chargers saw in me. They probably saw me in that type of mold and brought me in to do the same type of thing that he's done for such a long time."
A three year starter and a first team All-Conference selection as a senior, leading the Buckeyes in tackles with 121, tackles for loss with 19, while also accumulating 3 sacks, 2 interceptions and defending 3 passes. Tackling numbers were 63/7/1 as a junior after 66/15/3 the prior year.
"It helped me, along with some of my teammates, to learn what it takes to be a national championship-caliber team at the collegiate level," said Wilhelm. "That's something that we all brought and added to our resumes as we entered the NFL draft."
