Coach Marty Schottenheimer has been toying with the linebacker's alignment, in the wake of Junior Seau being traded to Miami this offseason. Schottenheimer considered sliding Zeke Moreno into Seau's spot -- Moreno was the starter when Seau missed three games at the end of last year.
But when the depth chart was revealed at minicamp, Schottenheimer had juggled the lineup once again.
Moreno was on the field, but at the middle position. Donnie Edwards, a Pro Bowler at that spot last year, was switched to the weak side. Ben Leber remains at strong side.
The thinking is Edwards' speed could be utilized more on the outside, instead of him being caught in the ruckus in the middle. At weak side, the Chargers hope to use his quickness by him shooting gaps and blitzing.
And while Moreno trotted out with the first team recently, his name is written in pencil. No doubt, he has the inside track to be a starter come opening day, but don't overlook Carlos Polk.
In his first two years, Polk, a Nebraska product, has proven to have a nose for the ball and a nastiness about him that allows him to star on special teams.
Moreno, though, won't back down. But neither will Polk, in what promises to be one of the training camp's prime battles.
The linebacking position wasn't the only one being looked at closely.
The secondary has undergone a complete rebuilding with not one opening day starter from 2002 expected to man the same position in the upcoming opening day.
Ryan McNeil has been switched from cornerback to free safety. Rogers Beckett, a demoted free safety last year, moves to strong safety, a position left vacant by Rodney Harrison's departure to New England.
Tay Cody, who had his season derailed last year by a toe injury, had one cornerback spot. Quentin Jammer, a second-year pro, was the other cornerback.
