Mathews shows no ill effects from car accident

Less than three days removed from a car accident that resulted in minor injuries, Ryan Mathews received a bulk of the first-team carries and looked just fine. Mathews broke a carry outside on his first touch of practice; scored three times in an 11-on-11 goal-line session; and had a pair of big gains in the nine-on-nine period.

Ingram flashes skills in pass-rush drills

First-round pick Melvin Ingram showed his pass-rushing skills during one of the positional drills, using speed to blow by Jacob Hester and a swim move to get past Curtis Brinkley. In coverage on a play-action pass during the inside run period, Ingram gave Vincent Brown a solid pop on a completion near the sideline.

Green catches everything thrown in his vicinity

Rookie TE Ladarius Green saw an increase in targets and made the most of them. The Chargers' fourth-round pick caught three passes from QB Jarrett Lee during the blitz period and caught three more throws in the red zone 11-on-11 session, including touchdowns on consecutive plays. Green was also one of the few players to solidly block Ingram off of the edge during an individual pass-rush drill.

Final session delivers highlight plays

A pair of big plays came in the red zone period that ended practice. Philip Rivers made one of his best throws of the day to Robert Meachem on a crossing route for a score in the beginning of the session. Later on, LB Demorrio Williams knocked Michael Spurlock to the ground with a big hit on a pass over the middle.

Several starters sit following night practice

Several starters sat out Thursday's practice, including Antonio Gates, Nick Hardwick, Takeo Spikes, Antoine Cason and Corey Liuget. Atari Bigby returned to practice but did conditioning drills as Brandon Taylor took the snaps opposite Eric Weddle. Some of the aforementioned absences provided a clearer look at the depth chart, as CBs Shareece Wright and Greg Gatson filled in for Cason while Randy McMichael and Dante Rosario saw action in place of Gates.

Rookie pair carries load in running game

The inside and outside running of undrafted rookie Michael Hayes highlighted the tail end of the nine-on-nine period, including a cutback run that went for a big gain. In the red zone 11-on-11 session, seventh-round pick Edwin Baker pounded the ball inside and broke a carry outside for a touchdown.
