Chargers cut kicker Novak, others

Chargers cut veteran kicker Nick Novak.

In a somewhat surprising move -- (depending on who you talk to) -- the Chargers cut veteran kicker Nick Novak Saturday as they shaped their 53-man roster.

Undrafted rookie Josh Lambo will take his spot.

The kicker competition during training camp had been somewhat scoffed at by the outside world, but as former MLS star Lambo continued to kick touchbacks -- an area of weakness for Novak -- it seemed to gain traction, then quiet down again after the final preseason game.

Why would they let go of Novak, who went 74-for-83 (89. 2 percent) on field goals the past three years?

Touchbacks. Youth. Less money. Strong leg.

It's a risk, as no one really knows how mentally capable Lambo will be when the game is on the line. We won't know until it happens.

It's a risk the Chargers are willing to take.
