WR Javontee Herndon to get his shot

The second year practice-squad player is active for the first time.

Wide receiver and kick returner Javontee Herndon needed to be patient.

He spent a season-and-a-half on the Chargers' practice squad, and while he hates that his opportunity came at the expense of an injured teammate -- WR Keenan Allen -- he knows it's an opportunity nonetheless.

He's ready.

After making several roster moves Tuesday, the Chargers added one more Wednesday when they signed defensive tackle Damion Square to the active roster.

Square spent time with San Diego last season, when he was signed off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs in November. Although he was on the active roster, he was inactive for the final seven weeks of the season. The 6-2, 293 pound Texas native was originally signed by Philadelphia in 2013 as an undrafted rookie and appeared in 11 games that season, recording 10 tackles in regular-season play and one tackle in the playoffs.

Square will wear No. 71.

Wide receiver and kick returner Javontee Herndon, who was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad Tuesday, will now wear No. 81. He had previously worn No. 8.

The Chargers also added wide receiver Isaiah Burse, safety Matt Daniels, outside linebacker Ben Gardner and running back Dreamius Smith to the team’s practice squad.

Safety Eric Weddle (groin) practiced Wednesday, but, because it was a walk-through, he didn't go all out. Weddle was quick to point out afterward that he still isn't sure he will play Monday.

"I don't know if I'm playing yet," he said. "I haven't even gone full speed yet. But, I'm doing everything I can to get back out there for my guys and help them get a win."

Weddle will not test the limits of his injury until Saturday. That practice will give him an indication of whether or not he'll be able to play against the Bears.
