Sunday, tight end Antonio Gates inched closer to making more history out of his 13-year NFL career.
Minutes before halftime in Jacksonville, quarterback Philip Rivers hit Gates for two touchdowns in under two minutes.
"Rivers to Gates!" ... Touchdown No. 102. Touchdown No. 103.
Gates needs nine more touchdowns to break the current record held by TE Tony Gonzalez for the most touchdown receptions in NFL history (111).
Rivers has five more games to get Gates to No. 112 if he wants to share the moment with his longtime friend and teammate. It's not clear where Gates -- a free agent in 2016 -- will be once the season ends, if he even plays at all.
“We’ve still got a little ways to go," Rivers told reporters after the Jaguars game, referencing the number of touchdowns left. "We’ve got to push it here these last five.”
