Chargers Camp: Thursday Notes

The San Diego Chargers began drills this morning with the wide receivers and Defensive backs matched one on one while the quarterbacks try to complete the pass.

The first play went to the offense as Drew Brees completed a 12 yard pass to a diving David Boston in front of Quentin Jammer. This would prove to be one of the tandems only connections as they struggled for the rest of the drill, mostly due to slippage on Boston's part. It's hard to say if the bruised hip is still bothering him but he clearly didn't look 100%.

In another battle, Drayton Florence was matched against Grant Mattos, which resulted in an incompletion as Florence had him smothered. One plus for the offense was Onome Ojo catching a deep ball over what appeared to be Kevin House. Jerry Wilson was matched against Dondre Gilliam but the defense won this one as Wilson was all over Gilliam. Terry Charles went against Hanik Milligan and lost as he failed to get off the line and was knocked down.

The most impressive player in this drill was Tay Cody. He continually sticks close to his man and makes plays on the ball. When I see him play I always walk away impressed. Tim Dwight also stood out as he proved very hard to cover.

In 11 on 11 drills, Vernon Fox saw time with the 1st team at SS. The O-line continues to open holes for the explosive LaDainian Tomlinson who is looking good receiving out of the backfield. His catches are mainly on the run and not just dump offs. This is scary for opposing defenses.

The offense ran the same play as on Tuesday with the same result...Tim Dwight smoking Jammer for a TD on a steak pass from Brees.

Dondre Gilliam beat Drayton Florence on a beautiful pass from Cleo Lemon.

Former college basketball standout Antonio Gates trying to make the team as a TE had a pair of solid grabs.

Otis Leverette filling in for Marcellus Wiley beat Vaughn Parker on a pass rush that would have resulted in a sack of Drew Brees, but Brees was allowed out of the pocket where he ended up throwing the ball away.

Other notables: Sammy Davis returned to the field for walkthroughs. Michael Keathley was back in the lineup at RG. Darren Bennett looked like Montana on fake field goal passes. I take that back, he looked more like Ryan Leaf (sorry Darren).
