Is DeForest Buckner right for the Chargers?

Buckner impressed at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Oregon defensive lineman DeForest Buckner made a splash at the NFL Scouting Combine, when he tied the record for the largest hands of any player to attend the Combine since the NFL began recording such stats in 2003, as part of the scouting process.

Buckner — whose hands measure at 11.75 inches, same as Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s tackle Gosder Cherilus — is an option for the Chargers as they prepare for the No. 3 pick in the 2016 draft.

Some analysts say Buckner is the best defensive end in his class. The 2015 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year notched 83 tackles last season — 17 for loss — and a Pac-12 leading 10.5 sacks.

The Chargers, who are desperate for help in the trenches, need impact players on defense. General manager Tom Telesco may see Buckner as just that for San Diego.
