Stay Tuned

On an overcast day in Carson, the San Diego Chargers were back at it today. With the release of Ryan Mc Neil on Tuesday sending a clear message, some veterans are feeling the heat...

Toniu Fonoti has been seen with the team, but is not participating in workouts. A tricep strain has kept him on the shelf for most of training camp. In an interesting turn, it is now being reported that Toniu's triceps is fine, but he is having foot problems. More specifically Plantar Fasciitis. That is a fancy name for a heel problem. What causes it is mainly the shape of ones foot, meaning too much weight is put on one specific area of a foot at a given time. As you know Toniu has plenty of weight to put on that foot. There are treatments for this so it's probably not serious. Stay tuned...

Dondre Gilliam appears close to returning after missing time with a knee injury. He has been performing light running as he nurses his knee back to health. Gilliam was mighty impressive before he went down and has definitely paid his dues. It will be interesting to see where he lands on the depth chart upon his return. Gilliam is more polished than his competition, possesses good hands and quickness, and before he went down had a serious shot to make the team. Stay tuned...

Terrence Kiel has been present. Don't jump out of your seat just yet, as he is only performing light running drills. Kiel's return is highly anticipated, especially with the release of Ryan Mc Neil. Upon his return Terrence will only have to surpass the 5'9 and ½ Vernon Fox to claim the starting strong safety position. To Fox's credit he has played well in his two days as a starter. Stay tuned...

David Boston did not participate in scrimmages this afternoon(ankle?). Instead of Tim Dwight and Reche Caldwell, 1st team wide receivers were Reche Caldwell and Eric Parker. We know how Marty prefers bigger receivers. I hate to even speculate about Timmy being on "the list", as he brings much to the table. Relegating him to second team wide receiver has definitely got me wandering though. Stay tuned....

Cory Raymer and Bob Hallen continue to flip flop as 2nd team center and left guard. With neither really establishing himself as better than the other, it may come down to the salary cap. With the solid play of some young guys, the Chargers may be hard pressed to retain both. Stay Tuned....

Sammy Davis continued his solid play with his return from injury today. It's no secret that the team would like him to take the starting cornerback spot from Tay Cody. If he continues his solid play this could happen soon, as the Chargers would be wise to insert him as the starter no later than the 3rd preseason game. Stay tuned....

At the defensive end position we know Raylee Johnson, Marcellus Wiley, and Adrian Dingle are locks. Let me rephrase that, they are probably going to make the team. As back ups Otis Leverette and Omari Hand have been impressive. Hard to see more than 4 defensive ends making the active roster and the safe money is on Leverette. Hand would be a welcome addition to the practice squad. Stay tuned.....

At practice today, the elevation in defensive play continued. 1st and 2nd team defenses kept the offense out of the end zone during full team scrimmages. Quentin Jammer was among one of the impressive today with numerous batted down passes. A solid showing in Seattle seemed to have boosted his confidence, as he has been playing well since.

The battles are getting exciting and the intensity has picked up. Not all jobs appear safe, even for some veterans. Heading into the second preseason game one can only wonder what is in store. Stay tuned...
