Chargers-Niners News and Notes

The NFL's preseason will officially come to an end Friday night after the San Francisco 49ers take on the San Diego Chargers at the "Q". Veterans are expected to play just a quarter as the team would like to stay healthy after the loss of four players thus far to injured reserve.

•San Diego is ranked third in the NFL in pass defense, allowing 127.7 yards per game.

Chargers Notes:

tight end Stephen Alexander (groin), cornerback Tay Cody (hamstring), guard Toniu Fonoti (foot) and tackle Vaughn Parker (back).

Alexander sought a second opinion on his injured groin. It has been troublesome since he underwent surgery between mini-camp and training camp.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement clearly states:

"Players' Right to a Second Medical Opinion: A player will have the opportunity to obtain a second medical opinion. As a condition of the responsibility of the Club for the costs of medical services rendered by the physician furnishing the second opinion, the player must (a) consult with the Club physician in advance concerning the other physician; and (b) the Club physician must be furnished promptly with a report concerning the diagnosis, examination and course of treatment recommended by the other physician."

Niners Notes:

Quarterback Jeff Garcia sat out practice because of back soreness. His status for Friday is uncertain.

"I may not know until tomorrow and I may not know until Friday. I'll see how he feels. He may go a series, that is my plan right now, but that can change," said Head Coach Dennis Erickson.

The 49ers are averaging 21.7 points over their first three exhibitions. The last time the 49ers topped 20 points per game in the preseason was 1991, when they averaged 24.2 over five games.

RB Kevan Barlow (right hamstring) worked out on the side but was not ready for team drills. Coach Dennis Erickson said Barlow could return today. WR Brandon Lloyd took an accidental knee to the head from CB Jimmy Williams after making a catch. Lloyd left practice because of dizziness. CB Antuan Simmons left practice because of dizziness blamed on the heat. LB Saleem Rasheed (left hamstring) is back at practice and looks to be at full speed. CB Mike Rumph (right groin) might practice today.
