Cuts Are In: Last Blood

The final cuts are in. The San Diego Chargers are down to the NFL mandated 53 man roster and can now eye who will make their practice squad tomorrow. It wasn't easy getting down to 53, and the Chargers used all the time up to the 1 PM PST deadline, but every team in the league must do it.

Injured Reserve:

Toniu Fonoti has been placed on injured reserve. Fonoti will be lost for the year to the Bolts. He has suffered from a triceps strain early in camp and Plantar Fasciitis most recently. Pronounced PLAN-tar fashee-EYE-tiss) is an inflammation of the plantar fascia. "Plantar" means the bottom of the foot, "fascia" is a type of connective tissue, and "itis" means "inflammation".

The Cuts:

The San Diegp Chargers released 14 players on Sunday to get to the 53 man limit.

Those released were offensive lineman Kevin Breedlove, quarterback Seth Burford, guard Luke Butkus, wide receiver Terry Charles, running back Dahrran Diedrick, fullback Joey Goodspeed, defensive lineman Omari Hand, defensive back Cedric Henry, kicker Mackenzie Hoambrecker, linebacker Jordan Kramer, quarterback Cleo Lemon, wide receiver Grant Mattos, cornerback Tony Okanlawon and defensive tackle Scott Pospisil.

Among the surprises was the release of both Lemon and Burford. The team will go into the season with just two quarterbacks on the roster, Drew Bres and Doug Flutie. A few other teams, Atlanta and Washington, have also decided to go that route to get more quality depth at other positions.

Leading the preseason in receptions and receiving yards was Terry Charles, but he also dropped a few passes. That cost him a spot on the roster. Even though Kassim Osgood had not played over the course of the preseason with a hand injury, he showed enough to warrant a spot in the lineup over Charles.

In total five undrafted free agents made the team. Besides Osgood, Phil Bogle, Jacques Cesaire, Stephen Cooper, and Antonio Gates made the roster.

Among the other surprises was the release of Hand who played well in a reserve role and was the cause of a Dorsey interception Friday. He could not beat out Otis Leverette and with the need for an extra defensive tackle in case Leonardo Carson misses time, he was caught in the numbers game.
