Jaguars 27, Chargers 21

Jacksonville, Fl -- The San Diego Chargers came into the game having not fumbled the ball. On the very first play from scrimmage by the Bolts, LaDainian Tomlinson fumbled. It was recovered by the Lorenzo Neal. On the first drive of the third quarter, Antonio Gates fumbled the ball inside the Jacksonville 10 yard line and Jacksonville drove the length of the field to score en route to a 27-21 victory.

San Diego is now 0-5 heading into the bye week.

Byron Leftwich hit Jimmy Smith twice and a few strong runs from Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala and Fred Taylor paved the way for a Jags touchdown from one yard out as Taylor ducked under a Zeke Moreno tackle to put the Jags up 7-0. Seth Marler hit the post on the extra point but it went through. It was a 14 play drive covering 62 yards.

After being reinstated from a suspension, David Boston showed the fans his explosiveness on one play in the second quarter. On a wide receiver screen, Boston took the ball 46 yards after the catch, taking his blocks and racing untouched into the end zone to tie the game at seven. It was his second catch of the drive and fourth of the game as he looks to show everyone why he was signed to a $47 million dollar contract. The drive was setup by a defensive stop for the Chargers as Jacksonville went for it on fourth and two from the San Diego 26, passing up a 42 yard field goal attempt. Jason Fisk brought pressure from the middle and was unable to wrap up Leftwich. Marcellus Wiley finished him off with his first sack of the year.

The Chargers could not capitalize on a botched handoff from Leftwich to LeBrandon Toefield in the second quarter as Kelvin Garmon was flagged for holding putting the Chargers potentially out of field goal range and short of a first down. Darren Bennett ended up punting. Jimmy Smith then made the catch of the day, pulling in a one handed grab on an over the shoulder pass from Leftwich, traversing 36 yards. A 37 yard touchdown pass to Wrighster was wiped off the board when he pushed off Donnie Edwards to make the reception. Then a clipping call pushed the Jags back even further, 1st down and 35 yards to go. That's ok; Leftwich hit Smith over the middle of the field for 25 yards to bring the ball back to the original line of scrimmage. Ray Lee Johnson caused Leftwich to fumble and the bad news continued as Jacksonville recovered. After a pass to Marc Edwards for nine and a few timeouts, Seth Marler kicked a 53 yard field goal to send the Jags into halftime with a 10-7 lead.

Key stat: 246 yard given up at halftime by the Chargers.

Drew Brees hit Eric Parker nine yards downfield to open up the second half. Parker, trying to get extra yards had his facemask wrenched on the play and the Chargers ended up in Jacksonville territory on that one play. A reverse to Boston for a first and a Tomlinson run of 12 yards put the ball inside the 20. Drew Brees ran a naked bootleg and tossed the ball to Antonio Gates who caught the ball and turned up field. He did not secure the ball on the play and ended up fumbling inside the Jax 10 yard line and ending the drive.

Jacksonville was able to capitalize on the fumble recovery. A go route to Matthew Hatchette went 45 yards. Hatchette beat the jam at the line by Sammy Davis with a swim move and simply outran him upfield. Troy Edwards capped the drive off with an 18 yard touchdown reception in the back corner of the end zone to put Jacksonville up 17-7.

After Brees was sacked on two consecutive plays and a delay of game penalty, pinning the Bolts inside their own five yard line, Bennett kicked a short punt to the San Diego 41 that was returned 24 yards by David Allen to the 16. The defense held nicely and limited the Jaguars to a 27 yard field goal, 20-7.

After three nice stops by the defense, the Chargers used the no huddle offense to bring the Chargers within six, at 20-14 on an Eric Parker 33 yard reception. Boston had two more hauls for 30 yards, 14-181 on the day, and Drew Brees had a scamper for 13 yards to setup the touchdown.

On a big third and seven with 2:00 to go in the game, Fred Taylor caught a screen pass and took it 60 yards to the house sealing the game, 27-14.

David Boston caught his second touchdown of the game with :20 seconds to go in the game to close the score to 27-21.

The Chargers could not recover the onsides kick, ending the game at 27-21.

P.S: For those of you who read the primer, I was a little off in my prediction on Jimmy Smith (8-137), he doesn't need to practice. In fact, bring him in for just the games. Last year he had eight catches after sitting out training camp. I was a little closer on Boston at least.
