Lose Team, Lose Job? Save Job with Vet?

The San Diego Chargers spent some extra time on the practice field on Monday after falling to 1-7 the day before.

"We took extra time," said Marty Schottenheimer during Monday's press conference. "It was about where we are and, more importantly, where we need to go."

"We took extra time," said Marty Schottenheimer during Monday's press conference. "It was about where we are and, more importantly, where we need to go." The team can't get any lower at this stage. One win in eight attempts after what was considered a big offseason leaves many questions, starting with the coach.

"I don't have all the answers," Marty Schottenheimer said. "I am in uncharted waters.

"I don't have as many of the answers as I need to have. I, and this staff, and this football team, are going to try and get us in the win column."

Clearly he needs to change tactics. As he admits, "At 1-7, I am not doing a very good job."

The question on everyone's mind is: does it start with the quarterback?

"It will be later in the week sometime. The determining factor will be which player gives you the best opportunity to win on Sunday. Whatever the decision is that player gets an opportunity to get the bulk of the reps.

"Regardless of whether it is Drew Brees Doug Flutie or Cleo Lemon in at quarterback, his job is to move the team."

Right now as Marty says, Drew Brees is "Not making the plays that you have to make." There is locker room turmoil over this decision and the wrong choice could ultimately finish Schottenheimer in San Diego if he has not done so already.

It is a delicate balance for the franchise as they do not want to be known as the team that has had two quarterback busts in a row. Drew Brees is still only 24, but there are serious doubters in the locker room and across the globe.

Speaking hypothetically Marty continued:

"Maybe it will give Drew an opportunity to step back and observe and take a little pressure off him. I have confidence in him. Some of the best players in sports get into a situation where things that were natural to do – become unnatural. He is not playing the way he expected to play."

Marty knows that he will come under fire no matter which way he chooses. The choice boils down to his job. Does he stick with Brees in what might be the move to make for the franchise, or does he go to the veteran and try and salvage his job.

"My responsibility is to pick the guy that gives us the best opportunity to win on Sunday."

"If we make the change and decide to go with Doug, I am not concerned about the lasting effects on Drew Brees. It won't be a gametime decision.

"Friday at the latest," added Schottenheimer. "It could be Wednesday."

On why Schottenheimer did not pull Brees against Miami:

"I didn't foresee the struggles that we had against Chicago. I was prepared when we did struggle. I was not prepared against Miami."

On whether Marcellus Wiley and Drew Brees hashed out their differences:

"Marcellus and Drew have discussed it, it is behind us."
