Scouting Report: Vince Wilfork

The San Diego Chargers would be out of their minds if they weren't interested in an explosive, inside stuffer that constantly gets penetration up the field. Quick off the snap and displays a great first step, which gives him an immediate edge over opponents.

Full Name: Vincent Wilfork School Miami-Fl

Ht: 6-2 Wt 345 40: 5.12 Number 75

Bio:

2002:
Ranked 11th on the team in tackles, despite not starting a game, credited with 43 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, seven sacks, eight quarterback hurries, one pass deflection and a forced fumble. Played in 12 of 13 games.

2001: Played extensively as Miami rotated defensive linemen each game. Led all Miami freshmen in tackles with 41, including 11 for loss and one quarterback sack.

The Good: Explosive, inside stuffer that constantly gets penetration up the field. Quick off the snap and displays a great first step, which gives him an immediate edge over opponents. Stays low playing with leverage and good pad level, getting underneath opponents, and then driving up the field. Wide-bodied lineman that is a load in the middle and can be tough to handle. Slides off blocks or pushes his way up the field, collapsing the pocket. Gets to the action with a great burst of closing speed in a straight line.

The Bad: Must improve hand technique as he easily is wired in blocks he should defeat. Best in a straight line and though athletic, not a lineman with great range (though that can be attributed to weight problems).

The Skinny: Wilfork has overcome a lot to get where he presently is. Playing a priority position up front on the defensive line, he has the skills to be a space eater that commands double teams and frees up line-mates. Though Wilfork has displayed flashes of brilliance this season he has not come out with the consistency or dominance scouts hoped to see in the potential first pick of the draft next April. He does hold a lot of upside potential and as a result will be selected very early when he enters the draft but must maintain focus and conditioning to attain his upper most level of ability.
