Chargers 2004 preseason schedule set, sort of

The San Diego Chargers have found out their preseason schedule for the 2004 season and one matchup, more than any other, bears watching. The Bolts will host the Indianapolis Colts in what could be tabbed as Manning Bowl I. The exact date and times of the matchups will be determined at a later date.

In week one, occurring sometime between August 12-16 the Chargers will face the Colts at home. The Colts finished the 2003 regular season at 12-4. The Chargers hold the number one overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft and some speculation has the team selecting quarterback Eli Manning. The link between the two would generate tons of excitement for a meaningless preseason game.

Week two of the preseason pits San Diego on the road against Arizona sometime Aug. 19-23. Arizona won last year's preseason fight 16-10. A 94 yard punt return by Eric Parker was negated by a Quentin Jammer penalty. Grant Mattos caught a 35 yarder from Cleo Lemon with just over two minutes to go in the game, his second touchdown reception of the preseason.

Week three, it's Seattle at home, Aug. 26-30. The Chargers lost 20-7 when the teams met during the preseason in 2003. The highlight for the Bolts was when former Charger Seth Burford made a nice fake to his running back in the flat which halted the defenders and Grant Mattos got behind them. Burford quickly got the ball to Mattos for a touchdown and the first points of the 200 preseason.

The Chargers' final tune up is Sept. 2-5 at San Francisco. The Chargers beat the Niners 24-3 during their 2003 preseason matchup at Qualcomm. The highlight was a 98 yard interception return by Drayton Florence.
