Update on Potential Chargers Trades

Updated Friday 10 PM PST: The San Diego Chargers are still peddling the number one overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft set to take place this Saturday at 9 AM PST. The latest news coming Thursday night has Cleveland making a strong push to acquire the top spot. On Friday, the deal from the Giants appeared even closer.

According to our sources out of Cleveland, the Browns are said to be offering this year's No. 7 overall, next year's first-round pick and Dennis Northcutt.

They would move up six spots to take their top target, Robert Gallery.

Northcutt is on the block because of a situation with his contract where had he filed the appropriate paperwork he would have become a free agent.

The Chargers reportedly do not want to deal with Cleveland unless they also get more return in this year's draft.

The Chargers have been talking to the Giants about a deal down to number four as well, but no second first rounder is included. The asking price has been a second rounder this year and future picks.

The sticking point in the Giants deal is supposedly that the Chargers want a #2 this year and #2 next year or Ike Hilliard, a #2 this year and #3 next year.

As of late Friday, the deal with the Giants appeared to be back on the front burner. The talks were moving late into the night but the Chargers asking price is believed to be met and sources say the team simply needs to convince ownership to sign off on it.
