Chargers Trade for Roman Oben

The San Diego Chargers acquired offensive tackle Roman Oben in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2005.

Oben brings significant experience and depth to the left tackle position and may be the starter when camp shakes out.

Roman Oben, 6-foot-4, has started 106 of 113 career games, including a stretch of 100 consecutive from 1997-2003.

The 305-pound Oben spent the 2002-03 seasons with the Buccaneers, starting 32 of 35 games, including playoffs, at left tackle.

The former third round pick of the New York Giants has also played with the Cleveland Browns. He became expendable when the Bucs picked up several offensive linemen in free agency.

Oben, 31, signed a four year deal in March of 2003 worth $4.6 million with a $25K signing bonus.

Oben returned to the African country of his birth this spring, Cameroon, donating $10,000 to finance the tuition, books and renovations of two elementary schools and a center for disabled children.

"I'm looking at these kids, with no socks and dirty shoes, and I'm thinking that was once me," Oben said. "Now I'm wondering what more I can do for next year, and how I can build on this and get more people involved."
