Chargers lose game, Brees

The San Diego Chargers didn't play as well as the score indicated. Although they lost by just six points, 34-28, to the New York Jets, it was a game marred by turnovers and the pulling of quarterback Drew Brees in the fourth quarter, reportedly due to a concussion.

Doug Flutie came on for the final Chargers drive of the game, replacing Drew Brees who was reportedly kept out of the game due to a concussion. Flutie led an 18 play, 81 yard drive that ended with Flutie tucking the ball and punching it in from six yards out to bring the Chargers within six as the clock read 36 seconds to go in the game.

Brees, coincidentally, wasn't happy with getting pulled and threw his helmet on the sideline after a discussion with head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

Brees had 12 plays between the time he sustained the concussion and the time he was removed from the game.

The Chargers were unable to come up with the onside kick and lost 34-28.

Curtis Martin built a two touchdown lead early in the game. Martin scored from one yard out on the first New York Jets drive and he ran another win after Brees was intercepted by Eric Coleman. Martin had 52 yards rushing during those two drives alone.

Doug Brien added a 28 yard field goal early in the second quarter to put the Jets up 17-0.

Tim Dwight returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and gave the Chargers life and a chance at keeping the game from being a blowout.

Brien added another field goal as the Jets scored three more points coming out of halftime.

Brees then threw his second interception of the game and the Jets turned it into seven points. Chad Pennington led a bootleg out to his right and found Jerald Sowell wide open for a touchdown from four yards out to put the Jets up 27-7.

LaDainian Tomlinson put the next drive on his shoulders. He took a screen pass and turned it into a 59 yard gain. Four plays later, Tomlinson ran it in from four yards out.

With just under eight minutes to go in the game, Brees completed his second consecutive pass for the first time in the game. Brees hit Reche Caldwell as he streaked across the field for a 33 yard touchdown to close within six, 27-21.

Pennington came back on the next drive and hit two short passes before hitting Santana Moss for a 48 yard completion down to the Chargers three. With Quentin Jammer all over Moss and flagged for pass interference, Moss came down with the acrobatic catch. Pennington then hit tight end Chris Baker on a similar pass that Sowell caught earlier in the game to extend the lead to 13.
