Chargers notes and quotes

Reche Caldwell added four more catches on Sunday to give him eight for the season through two games. Caldwell had eight all of last year. He got the starting nod for the San Diego Chargers along with Kassim Osgood and Eric Parker as the team opened up in a three wide receiver set.

LaDainian Tomlinson gained 167 yards from scrimmage, 87 rushing on 19 carries and 76 receiving on three receptions.

He also scored his 39th career rushing touchdown to move ahead of Paul Lowe for second all-time on the Chargers list. Chuck Muncie is the only hurdle left. Muncie had 43 rushing touchdowns in his career.

Tomlinson is 200 yards behind Lowe on the all time rushing list with 4,772. He is also 317 yards away from passing Kellen Winslow for fifth on the Chargers all-time yards from scrimmage charts.

The Chargers are 8-24 when Tomlinson is held to under 100 yards rushing.

Doug Flutie completed seven passes on one drive while Drew Brees completed eight in over three quarters of action. With his two interceptions on Sunday, Brees tied Ryan Leaf for fifth on the all-time list with 33 career interceptions.

"I had to get it out or take a sack," Brees said of one of his interceptions. He even went so far as to acknowledge that he was not necessarily even looking to complete it.

"It looked like Gates slipped," Brees said of the second one.

Perhaps the concussion was keeping him from taking on any responsibility.

Jesse Chatman's ten yards rushing tied his season high from a year ago. His career high is 18 yards rushing, occurring on Nov. 22, 2002 against Miami.

Tim Dwight's 87 yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the first regular season return since Ronney Jenkins returned one 93 yards against Oakland in November of 2001.

"He did a terrific job," Schottenheimer said of Dwight.

"The wedge did a great job of crushing guys back inside. So I went right, juked the kicker, then went left and I was there."

Dwight admitted his hamstring did not feel 100 percent and he felt a twinge as he entered the end zone.

Randall Godfrey left the game early with a concussion and was replaced by Stephen Cooper. Cooper began play in the second quarter and ended up leading the team in tackles with nine. Of the seven times that Cooper tackled Curtis Martin, he gained just 13 yards. Cooper's nine tackles surpassed his season total of eight from a year ago.

Instead of talking about his game, Cooper opted to talk about the team:

"We just have to play together," he said. "We still have a lot of things we have to improve on. We have a great coaching staff. We have great players."

Jets Pro Bowl center left the game in the second half with a broken hand and Jonathan Goodwin took his place. The Chargers were unable to exploit the matchup, prompting quarterback Chad Pennington to say, "Jonathan kept his poise, and ran the show."
