Sizing up the NFL-prospects this weekend

What are scouts saying about Florida State's Chris Rix? Is Chris Canty on the shelf? And who is the ACC's most underrated defensive prospect? All this plus other news surrounding prospects that may, or may not, impact next April's draft.

Big things were expected from Chris Rix by NFL scouts this year and he has not delivered.  Rix has been so bad in fact many feel his draft stock has continually regressed since his freshman season at Florida State.  Many in scouting circles feel his play coupled with prior off-the-field problems makes Rix undraftable right now.  To further complicate the matter Rix is struggling with an ankle injury which will make a quick turnaround of his fortunes very difficult.

Virginia defensive end Chris Canty injured a knee in Saturday's game and subsequently had an MRI performed on the joint Sunday.  Coach Al Groh said he did not have the results and stated  it was doubtful that the All-American candidate would play against Clemson

North Carolina State junior defensive end Manny Lawson, a tremendously talented prospects who projects to outside linebacker, was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation's defensive player of the week.  Most agree Lawson is one of the most unsung pro-prospects in the ACC.

Washington fullback Zack Tuiasosopo will miss the remainder of the season after breaking a bone in his right leg Saturday. Tuiasosopo, one of the few triple-threat fullbacks available for next April's draft, must now petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA for medical reasons or his college career is over.

A pair of Longhorn tight ends are starting to stand out.  Both junior David Thomas and senior Bo Scaife excel as pass catchers and have proved as much this year.  Thomas is averaging more than 25-yards per reception on eight catches this season while Scaife more than twelve on five catches.  A terrific athlete, Scaife could be a late round gem in next April's draft as prior injury problems will redflag him into the late rounds but time and patience could reap rewards.

TCU senior offensive tackle Anthony Alabi, a solid mid-round choice, has been sidelined with a leg injury. No further updates have been available.

UNT running back Patrick Cobbs, a productive college runner who led the nation in rushing last season and is considered a potential late round pick will miss his third straight game this weekend. A potential change of pace back in the NFL, Cobbs has missed the past two games with a sprained left knee.
