Chargers win convincingly

The San Diego Chargers had been playing some sloppy ball of late. On Sunday – that changed. The offense was crisp and the defense performed admirably. It was a complete game in all facets and the Bolts came away with a 21 point victory, 38-17.

The Chargers put the stake in the heart of Tennessee when Drew Brees hit Reche Caldwell for a 58 yard touchdown with just under seven minutes to go in the game. It was in answer to the Titans who closed within seven at 24-17. The Titans corner tried to jump the route and Caldwell made a one-handed grab and went into the end zone untouched.

Brees set the tone early on. He hit Caldwell 49 yards down the field on a pass that went over his left shoulder to setup the Bolts initial score. It was on the following play that LaDainian Tomlinson ran the ball in from 15 yards out to put the Bolts up by seven.

Tennessee came right back on the next series to even the score. Billy Volek, playing in place of the injured Steve McNair, went 7-for-7 for 75 yards, capped off by a four yard fade route to Derrick Mason.

Caldwell opened up the Chargers second drive of the second quarter with a 20 yard reverse. Tomlinson then softened up the middle with an 18 yard run that put the Bolts just outside the red zone. It wasn't long before Brees hit Antonio Gates in the back of the end zone for a touchdown, 14-7 Chargers.

The Chargers took advantage of good field position on their next possession. On a drive that started at their 49, Brees went 4-for-5 and Tomlinson added 14 yards on two carries. Brees hit tight end Justin Peelle for a ten yard score to put them up by fourteen going into halftime.

Tomlinson got his big gain in the third quarter. He opened up the second series of the half with a 42 yard scamper. Two rushes and a reception later setup a Nate Kaeding 31 yard field goal to put the Bolts up 24-7.

The Titans came back with a 16 play drive, converting two fourth downs, but had to settle for a field goal from Gary Anderson.

The Titans then executed a perfect onside kick and recovered the ball. Billy Volek went 9-of-11 for 53 yards on the drive and punched it in on a three yard pass to Shad Meier. They converted another fourth down on the drive and closed to within seven, 24-17.

The Chargers capped the scoring with a 21 yard touchdown run by Jesse Chatman. The play was made possible after the Titans went for it on fourth down from their own 21 and failed to convert.
