Chargers release Jason Ball; Add Hallen

The San Diego Chargers released two players today – center Jason Ball and wide receiver Micah Ross – and added two players to the active roster, signing defensive back Jerrell Pippens from the team's practice squad and adding free agent center-guard Bob Hallen.

Bob Hallen is in his seventh NFL season and joins the Chargers for the second time. He played the 2002-03 seasons with Chargers, starting 13 of 16 games played. Hallen spent his first four NFL seasons in Atlanta after joining the Falcons as a second-round draft choice. Most recently he signed with the New England Patriots in 2004 and was released prior to the regular season.

Jerrell Pippens joined the team as a rookie free agent this season and has spent the past seven games on the practice squad.

Jason Ball came to the Chargers as a rookie free agent in 2002 and started 21 of 24 games during his first two seasons. This season he did not report to the team until Sept. 18. He played in the last three games in which he started Weeks 5-6 for injured starter Nick Hardwick.

Micah Ross played six games with the Chargers in 2003 and the first seven games this season mostly on special teams. He did make a reception for the Chargers.

Running back Calvin Murray takes Pippens' place on the practice squad.
