The Chargers scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters as they cruised to victory over the Raiders at Qualcomm.
The Bolts scored on six of their first seven possessions – the only time they did not score was when Justin Peelle fumbled deep in Oakland territory.
After the Chargers defense forced a three and out, Drew Brees came out and hit Antonio Gates and followed it up with a 24 yard completion to Keenan McCardell. On the next play, Brees hit Peelle who snuck the ball in past the goal line to put the Bolts up by seven.
Peelle would fumble at the Oakland nine on the next possession but they forced Oakland to kick from deep in their territory. A 32 yard return from Eric Parker set the Bolts up at the Oakland 29. After Brees hit Neal for 12, two penalties on the Raiders set the ball up at first and goal. LaDainian Tomlinson punched it in and the Chargers were up 14-0.
The Raiders closed within seven, using a mix of run and pass to put together a ten play, 74 yard drive, capped off by a Tyrone Wheatley touchdown from five yards out. Doug Gabriel caught three passes for 50 yards during the drive.
Tomlinson accounted for 28 yards on the next drive and a roughing the passer penalty on Oakland setup another score. Brees hit McCardell from 13 yards out to extend the league back to 14.
The next drive started at the San Diego 47. Brees hit Eric Parker for 22 yards and came back to hit Tim Dwight for a 23 yard touchdown. Dwight was matched up in single coverage against the safety and Brees checked off to him on the play. The Chargers were up 28-7 at that point.
On the first possession of the second half, Brees again hit Gates – as he did to open the game – for 29 yards on a beautiful catch down the sidelines. Gates capped the drive off by catching a five yard touchdown pass from Brees and the Bolts were up 35-7.
Jesse Chatman took over for Tomlinson on the next drive and his first two runs went 23 yards. Neal had three carries during the drive and Brees hit McCardell and Parker for 36 combined yards. It setup a one yard touchdown pass to Gates – his second touchdown of the game and Brees' fifth TD pass.
Kerry Collins brought the Raiders back on the next drive, going 5-for-6 for 60 yards. He hit tight end Doug Jolley for a 13 yard touchdown to make the score 42-14 – the way the game ended.
Chargers roll, 42-14
