Chargers season ends in overtime

It came down to a field goal – actually two. The first chance in overtime belonged to the San Diego Chargers but Nate Kaeding missed wide right from 40 yards out and gave the New York Jets a second life. Doug Brien converted his shot with five seconds left in overtime, hitting from 28 yards out to give the Jets a 20-17 overtime victory at Qualcomm.

The Chargers came back from a ten point deficit in the fourth quarter to send it into overtime.

Faced with fourth and goal from the three with time winding down in regulation and the Bolts down by seven, Drew Brees threw up a wild pass that fell incomplete. The Jets began celebrating but it was premature. A roughing the passer penalty on Eric Barton gave the Chargers a first down. Brees hit tight end Antonio Gates on a drag route to tie the game at 17-17 with just 11 ticks on the regulation clock.

Nate Kaeding had hit from 35 yards out with just over ten minutes to go to put the Bolts in position to tie.

The Chargers drew first blood in the second quarter. A 13-play drive was capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Brees to Keenan McCardell. The play was originally ruled incomplete with the referee saying it was bobbled but head coach Marty Schottenheimer challenged the call. After review, it was clear that McCardell had one foot down and tapped his toe in the end zone for the score.

Brees ended the game 31-42 for 319 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Schottenheimer gave the Jets great field position, at the Chargers 37. A 21-yard pass from Chad Pennington to Justin McCareins put the Jets inside the twenty. A 13-yard pass to an uncovered Anthony Becht tied the game at 7-7.

The Jets go ahead score came in the third quarter. Pennington hit Santana Moss as he slipped past Jerry Wilson and caught a 47-yard bomb.

Pennington threw for 279 yards on 23-of-33 passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Doug Brien kicked a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter to put the Jets up by ten but missed wide-right on a 33-yard field goal attempt on the game's opening drive.
