Keenan McCardell, acquired in a mid-season trade with Tampa Bay for third and sixth round draft picks in the 2005 NFL Draft was signed to a two-year contract extension.
After joining the Chargers on October 19, McCardell helped lead the team to eight straight wins and a playoff berth, their first since 1995.
McCardell, 6-foot-1, 191 pounds, caught 31 passes for 393 yards and a touchdown for the Chargers in 2004.
"He creates separation as a route runner," head coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "He understands how to get open. He is very sure-handed and a guy that has a lot of confidence."
McCardell will receive a $4.1 million signing bonus and base saleries of $2.65 million in 2006 and $2.6 million in 2007. His base salary for 2005 has dropped from $2.75 down to $1 million, the trade-off being made up in his signing bonus.
McCardell missed three games late in the season while recovering from a hamstring strain. He came back in time to start in the AFC Wild Card Playoff game against the New York Jets on Jan. 8, catching four passes for 50 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown catch.
A two-time Pro Bowl selection, McCardell has amassed 755 catches for 9,763 yards and 53 touchdowns through his career.
McCardell won Super Bowl rings with the Washington Redskins following the 1991 season and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2002 season.
McCardell will change his jersey number to 87 for the 2005 season.
