Two new voices can be heard on the team's new flagship station, Rock 105.3 (KIOZ-FM). The Chargers and Clear Channel Communications have hired Josh Lewin, Hank Bauer and Katy Temple to be the voices of San Diego Chargers football.
Lewin and Temple are new to the broadcast and Bauer returns for his eighth season. Lewin will be the new play-by-play voice and Temple will fill the newly-created role of sideline reporter. Bauer continues in his role as color analyst.
All radio broadcasts will be available nationally on Sirius Radio and heard on the following stations throughout Southern California:
KIOZ: 105.3 FM: San Diego
KMPC: 1540 AM: Los Angeles / Orange County
KTMQ: 103.3 FM: Temecula / Riverside / San Bernardino
KXPS: 1010 AM: Palm Springs / Palm Desert / Indio / Coachella Valley
KXO: 1230 AM: Imperial Valley / Yuma
"We've put together a solid team on the field and in the radio booth," said Chargers Executive Vice President Jim Steeg. "We think San Diego and Charger fans everywhere will enjoy the energy level of this trio. Everyone is already well-aware of Hank's enthusiasm in describing the play on the field. Now the fans are going to have two new energetic voices to help bring them closer to the action."
Steeg added: "And we have put together a radio network that assures fans throughout Southern California will be able to listen to every game of their favorite team."
"Josh brings the best combination of knowledge, skill, personality and chemistry," said Jim Richards of Clear Channel Communications. "He is THE guy who will mesh well with the attitude of the station as we begin a new era of Chargers radio coverage on Rock 105.3."
Lewin, 36, is currently serving as the television play-by-play announcer for the Texas Rangers, a job he's held since 2002. He also is the Fox Television Network play-by-play announcer for the Major League Baseball "Saturday Game of the Week," Major League Baseball's National League Division Series as well as NFL football. He has announced for SportsUSA Radio Network since 2003, covering NFL and Big 12 college basketball events. Lewin graduated from Northwestern University in 1990 with a degree in journalism. He is the author of two books and is a columnist in the bi-weekly national publication The Sporting News.
"Josh Lewin is one of the finest young broadcasters I've ever worked with," said David Hill, Chairman, Fox Sports Television. "He brings an excitement and an insight to his calls of any sports event which really makes the event come alive for the viewer or listener. Josh also has a maturity far beyond his years, with a deep and abiding respect for the traditions of the game and for the participating athletes. I am positive he will be a wonderful addition to the burgeoning Chargers' family."
"(Clear Channel and the Chargers) have made a great choice in selecting Josh Lewin," said Rudy Martzke, former USA Today TV sports columnist. "He clearly demonstrated solid improvement over the years in Fox's strong baseball lineup and gained the respect of those who follow sports broadcasting. This is an outstanding step toward a new look in the Chargers' radio booth."
Bauer, the former standout special teams player and coach of the team, returns for his eighth year on the Chargers broadcast. Bauer, a member of the San Diego Chargers' 40th Anniversary All-Time Team, has been working for or covering the team as a member of the media since 1977.
Temple of XETV, Fox 6 in San Diego, will provide updates and information from the sidelines during the games. Temple has been a sportscaster at Fox 6 in San Diego since 1999.
The nine-hour game-day broadcast will begin with a pre-game show hosted by, among others, C.S. Keys (Fox 6), Eddie Pappani (Rock 105.3) and former Chargers linebacker Lew Bush. KUSI's Steve Quis and Bush will host the post-game show. Joe Tutino will serve as executive producer of the entire game-day broadcast.
The Chargers and Clear Channel also will partner on several radio shows during the season. The exact days and times will be released when the fall lineup is finalized.
The games also will be heard in Spanish in San Diego on XEXX, 1420 AM.
