Chargers sign first round pick Shawne Merriman

The San Diego Chargers have come to terms with Shawne Merriman, taken 12th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft, on a five-year deal.

After a week long stalemate that had both sides in continuing negotiations, the Chargers have come to terms with Shawne Merriman, a linebacker out of the Maryland, on a five-year deal worth a reported $11.33 million.

Merriman had held out of minicamp because of concerns about the way the injury clause was worded without a proper contract in place.

Merriman earned All-American and All-ACC first-team honors as a senior, registering a career-high 85 tackles (53 solos) and leading the team with 8½ sacks, 17 stops behind the line of scrimmage, ten pressures and three forced fumbles.

He is expected to arrive in time for practice on Tuesday. He will officiiall miss seven practices.

"We're excited to get Shawne here and integrated into our defense as quickly as possible," said General Manager A.J. Smith. "The negotiations with Kevin Poston were cordial, professional and it was a pleasure doing business with him."
