Chargers and Gates agree on six-year deal

It took an ultimatum and cost Antonio Gates and the Chargers a regular season game but the two sides agreed to a six-year deal on Tuesday.

Chargers Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates has agreed to terms on a new six-year contract.

The signing comes after missing a Saturday deadline imposed by the team to sign the one-year tender as an exclusive rights free agent.

By missing the deadline, Gates is out of the regular season opener in Dallas. He was on the practice field Tuesday morning and will sign the contract Tuesday afternoon.

A press conference has been scheduled for this afternoon.

Additional terms of the contract were not disclosed.
