A conversation with LaDainian Tomlinson

LaDainian Tomlinson will face his childhood team on Sunday – putting his own family in a state of disarray as Cowboy fans and obviously Chargers fans.

Talk about playing the team you idolized growing up:

LaDainian Tomlinson: It is always great to play. My childhood memories are great and I enjoyed my time there in Texas.

It is not only special for me but my family who are also Cowboys and Chargers fans.

Is it more special since it is also the start of the season?

LaDainian Tomlinson: I am very excited. The Cowboys were my childhood team. I really looked up to Troy and Michael and Emmitt and watched them turn a 1-15 team into winning the Super Bowl. I got to experience just watching them. It is going to be great. My friends and family are still Cowboys fans.

What are your thoughts on Julius Jones?

LaDainian Tomlinson: He has to do what got him to this point. Just be himself. He is going to be able to make plays.

How impressed have you been with his play?

LaDainian Tomlinson: I am very impressed. A lot of times it takes a back a while. He has done a great job.

Talk about your connection to the state of Texas:

LaDainian Tomlinson: I have a big Texas connection. I still have a football camp and next year will have one in TCU. I come back to visit every season.

You will face the 3-4 defense when Dallas comes to town. How has your ability to know the defense changed over the years?

LaDainian Tomlinson: We face it everyday in practice. I have accustomed to facing it. It has become natural. I think it will help me really see a different type of defense rather than seeing the 4-3 all the time.

Does quarterback Drew Brees have anything to prove this year?

LaDainian Tomlinson: The situation we have here with the quarterbacks. . .He does not have anything to prove. He has proven he is a top-notch quarterback in this league. I don't see why he would have to prove it.

Talk about the importance of your offensive line and how their solid play sparks the team:

LaDainian Tomlinson: They were very important. We had two rookies step right in and do a great job along with the other veterans we had. They did a great job. I really commend them.

This year, a change in coaches is hard. They have done a great job. I look forward to working with them.

One carry, 55-yards for the preseason:

LaDainian Tomlinson: The hole was so big you could run through it.
