The San Diego Chargers will go east to face new arch-nemesis, the New York Jets. Two of their five losses last season came against New York, including the playoffs.

Head coach Marty Schottenheimer, then with KC, hired Jets head coach Herman Edwards as team's scout and defensive backs coach (1990-95).


Team's four losses have been by a total of 12 points. The offense is number two in the NFL inside the 20 with 20 touchdowns in 28 trips (71.4 percent).

Quarterback Drew Brees has complied a career-best consecutive-game passing total of 623 yards (299, 324) in past two weeks. Since start of '04, Brees has 15 touchdowns vs. five interceptions on the road and has a 98.5 passer rating in those 12 games.

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson has passed for three touchdowns in three pass attempts on season. Tomlinson (11) is one of two NFL players with 10+ touchdowns (Shaun Alexander, SEA, 12).

Wide receiver Keenan McCardell (10,207) needs 59 receiving yards to surpass Hall of Famer and former Charger Lance Alworth (10,266) for 21st-most in NFL history. The club is 5-0 when tight end Antonio Gates records two-plus touchdown catches. Gates (33) is the only NFL tight end with 25+ first downs.

Rookie linebacker Shawne Merriman had 2.0 sacks last week; the first San Diego rookie since Chris Mims (1992) to post 2.0+ in a game and he is tied (4.0) for the NFL rookie lead in sacks.


Quarterback Vinny Testaverde (3,667) needs 20 completions to surpass Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton (3,686) for 5th-most in NFL history. Testaverde's teams have won 21 of past 25 games (.840) when he throws two or more touchdowns

Running back Curtis Martin (4-0) has never lost to San Diego. In the last meeting (9/19/04), Martin rushed for 119 yards with two touchdowns on 32 carries (3.7 avg.). Martin (99) needs one touchdown to be the 10th running back in NFL history to score 100.

Wide receiver Laveranues Coles (24) is tied for 7th-most receiving first downs in the AFC. In past two games, wide receiver Justin McCareins (seven receptions) is averaging 23.1 yards per catch.

In two career meetings, the defense has limited Brees to one touchdown while intercepting him twice in each game. Brees' passer ratings vs. Jets: 63.0 & 47.1, respectively.

Defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson has 3.0 sacks and a forced fumble in the past three games; he registered 0.5 sack and a forced fumble in the last meeting. Cornerback Ty Law has an interception in three consecutive games for the third time in his career and seeks his first career streak of 4 consecutive. Law (4) is tied for 3rd in NFL with 4 interceptions.

Rookie punter Ben Graham (38.7) stands fourth in the AFC in net punting average.
