Chargers flying east for final scouting trip

While they will fly to New York for the NFL Draft in less than two weeks, San Diego is flying east to unearth another diamond in the rough.

What has them flying east a week before the NFL Draft will take place?

The chance to meet the next Antonio Gates.

Obviously, that would be the best outcome, particularly if San Diego was to snatch Connecticut basketball player Ed Nelson.

The festivities begin at 11 AM and will be in attendence.

According to agent Joe Linta, so will the San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. All have confirmed they will be in attendance.

Last time the Chargers went to workout a basketball player, three teams were watching and only two teams tried to sign Gates.

Nelson, 6-foot-6, 265-pounds earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors in 2002 as a basketball player. He hasn't played football since his sophomore year in high school.

"After watching him workout, I came out knowing he's an NFL prospect at tight end," said Linta. "He's got great quickness, good hands, and tremendous lower body strength."
