Chargers add QB Charlie Whitehurst in third

The San Diego Chargers selected quarterback Charlie Whitehurst out of Clemson in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft, 81st overall.

With no quarterback controversy for nearly two months, the San Diego Chargers used their third round pick to select Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst.

The former Clemson quarterback set over 40 school records during his three and a half years as a starter.

his father was an NFL quarterback with the Green Bay Packers and Whitehurst himself has all the tools to succeed at the next level - height, strong arm and success against elite level competition during his college career at Clemson.

Titans' offensive coordinator Norm Chow said during the Senior Bowl, "Charlie Whitehurst has obviously been very well coached. He has good technique. He just needs to keep working hard. Getting bigger, getting stronger. He comes from a nice system."

As a senior at Clemson, Whitehurst completed 227-of-338 passes for 2,474 and 11 touchdowns.

While Philip Rivers is the starter heading into 2006 and A.J. Feeley sits second on the depth chart, Whitehurst will provide a youthful backup if the worst case happens and the top two fall.
