Chargers add Chase Page, Jimmy Martin in Rd 7

In the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers selected North Carolina defensive tackle Chase Page with the 225th overall pick and followed it up by taking Virginia Tech offensive tackle Jimmy Martin, 227th overall, with the pick they acquired from Minnesota for Toniu Fonoti.

A former offensive lineman who moved to the defensive side of the ball as a sophomore, Chase Page notched 27 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss and four sacks as a senior for the TarHeels.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound defensive lineman visited with the Chargers prior to the draft.

Page has played both defensive tackle and defensive end for North Carolina, despite missing all of 2004 with a torn tendon in his left hand.

Prior to the injury, Page notched 96 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss in 2002 and 2003.

Jimmy Martin, a 6-foot-4, 303-pound offensive lineman who can play multiple positions on the line but will probably be moved inside in the NFL.

He earned All-Conference honors over the last two years, Martin anchored the left tackle position with 45 starts under his belt in a marquee program.

As a junior, Martin graded out at 86 percent with 18 knockdowns, earning ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week in a win over Maryland. A tough player, he provides depth for the Chargers offensive line.
