Scouting two undrafted Chargers

Always active in undrafted free agency, the San Diego Chargers went to the backfield and brought in a running back and fullback.

Full Name: Shawn Willis School: Oklahoma State Pos: FB

Ht: 6-1 Wt: 267 40: 4.89 Year: 5Sr

Bio: Former linebacker who started the past three seasons. Career-best rushing totals of 31/149/5 came as a sophomore. Used sparingly last year when the team went to one-back sets.

Pos: Aggressive lead blocker who clears lanes for ball carriers. Blocks down or engulfs opponents and removes them from the action. Punishing short-yardage runner when handed the ball. Plays with good balance, keeping his feet off the initial hit.

Neg: Not quick out of his stance nor effective around tackle. Average skill in pass protection.

Analysis: Possessing top size/speed numbers for a lead blocker, Willis has possibilities at the next level but will be downgraded due to minimal playing time as a senior.

Full Name: Bryson Sumlin School: Fresno State Pos: RB

Ht: 5-10.5 Wt: 206 40: 4.65 Year: 5Sr

Bio: Rotational starter the past two seasons who posted 120/536/5 on the ground as a senior, 1,104 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns the prior year.

Pos: Instinctive ball carrier with marginal size/speed numbers. Sees the field, finds the cutback lanes and weaves through the traffic on the inside. Patient and waits for blocks to develop. Effective blocker in pass protection.

Neg: Not a creative runner who eludes defenders. Overall game lacks explosion and quickness.

Analysis: A hard-working and reliable team player, Sumlin could fit in as a third down back/special teams player in the NFL.
