Merriman not yet suspended, appeal pending

Published reports that have Shawne Merriman suspended four games are a little premature according to the San Diego Chargers linebacker.

Shawne Merriman spoke to the media on Monday in an attempt to clear his name. He did not allow for questions, stating the following in response to a question:

"I am not allowed.

"There are a lot of things I want to say but am not allowed to say and will say but am not allowed right now. As soon as I am able to speak on the facts, I will."

As for what Merriman had to say, here are the highlights as Merriman will go through the appeals process:

"Wow. This really has been a hard process. I am dealing with it.

"I got a chance to talk to my teammates and coaches and I have full support from everyone. I basically apologized to them for the whole situation being a distraction. I tried to explain the process that I am not suspended. Some of the things I have been accused.

"I am not running from the situation. I am not running from anyone. I am going to be straight up and honest with the situation and deal with it accordingly.

"Hopefully no one rushes to judgment or basically makes me guilty because nothing has been done wrong on my part. I will get it straightened out as soon as possible.

"What is important is that I help this team and still be the person I have been so far. I am not going to change during this whole situation. I will continue to do the right thing and will handle it like I have always handled it.

"I am sorry for one. No matter what happened I will take responsibility for everything, no matter what happens. I am not running from the situation and will do what is best for the team.

"I have done a lot of things with younger guys about life in the NFL and I will continue to do that. I am trying to spread as much knowledge as I can.

"I have no reason to do anything wrong, especially when I am in the spotlight and trying to present to people the right and wrong way to go about things.

"This is a mistake that has to be dealt with correctly."
