Chargers trade up to select Eric Weddle

The San Diego Chargers traded up with Chicago to pick 37 in round two to select Utah safety Eric Weddle. How much did they like him? They gave up their second round pick this year, third round pick this year, a third rounder next and a fifth rounder in 2007.

Eric Weddle has played everywhere on the field for Utah. He has seen time at cornerback, wide receiver, safety, and even quarterback.

An athletic player that has been on the San Diego radar for quite some time, Weddle has great football acumen. He doesn't have all the measurables, but is a football player who has a nose for the ball.

He has good instincts, reads the quarterback well and reacts quickly to the ball. He is not afraid to bump at the line of scrimmage but will get beat if he is manned-up and does not get a jam at the line.

Lightning Quicks:

The Chargers do not pick again until the end of the third with their supplemental pick acquired from the loss of Drew Brees, although there is still talk about Michael Turner being traded sometime during the third – perhaps to Green Bay or Tennessee – making the deal to acquire Weddle that much more acceptable. They would also net a 2008 first round pick in such a deal.
